From Italy – wear red underwear for New Year’s Eve

Perhaps our favourite New Year tradition comes from Italy, where it’s lucky to wear red underwear for New Year’s Eve.

Red is said to bring luck and prosperity for the coming year. It’s also seen as a lucky charm for fertility, as well as good luck and happiness.

Many young Italians also hope they’ll get lucky on the night, wearing their new red boxers, briefs, jockstrap, thong or string.

The tradition goes back to medieval times, when men would wear a red drape over their groin to ward off evil spirits and witches.
